The Third Letter: A Deaf People and an Identity

I was born with hearing but I'm a Deaf right now. I've been gotten two methods, e.g oral method communication, and sign language,

When I still a student in Don Bosco school, Wonosobo, I learned speech therapy, talking, and oral communication. The therapist said, "The Deaf people are can speaking hearing people with oral communication, So, you didn't allow to speaking sign language, All hearing people are can't speaking sign language." I didn't know what is he saying but I believe it. I just followed his.

I learned communication with hearing people but if #deaftime I speaking sign language with Deaf friends. I didn't many using sign language with them. I often speaking oral communication with them. I learned that method for nine years.

After that, I move to Solo for continuing high school for six years. I'm also speaking oral communication with hearing students. Did you know? I'm one of the Deaf students in the classroom. 99% of hearing students and only 1% of Deaf students like me. So, that's why I using oral communication.

In June 2016, Decky is a Deaf person inventing me for attending breaking the fast with the Deaf community. I shocked by them because they're used sign language even there are hearing people could speaking sign language. Only I can't sign language but I am happy with them because I felt like being a Deaf person have an identity. Officially, I am a new member of Gerkatin (Gerakan untuk Kesejahteraan Tuli Indonesia, Indonesian Deaf organization) until the present.

I felt to have the same opportunity and made an important decision in my life. I no longer using oral communication and convert to sign language because only sign language brought me to the true world. Sign language is the most beautiful gift by God to Deaf people.

Unfortunately, my parents are didn't supporting my decision but I don't care and I just care about the Deaf community. I always fighting to give the best things for the Deaf community in Indonesia. This, I have doing so far.

And finally, I've been finding my identity to be a Deaf person and user of sign language. I am proud of that fact. I will always pride my identity everywhere. Life and die, I still a Deaf person. You should know that fact.

I hope so. I hope everyone will be respect and support to the Deaf community in Indonesia due to make equality and justice to all backgrounds human. Indonesia is one human.

Saya ...

Gloss, A Forgotten Learning Foreign Language and Translate

I was testing a student who stood up to share her short story in signs in our class. She was so good at signing despite sign language being the third language that she is learning and isn't a native speaker. She was confused about gloss or glosa in Indonesian. That's the thing that is most often forgotten when learning and translating a foreign language. Foreign language teachers almost never teach about gloss to students and yeah, I am sure some do and some do not.  The Gloss (Gr) means when a word is attached to a sign in simple terms. It refers to the way that ASL (American Sign Language) names signs in order to give a sense of the meanings behind them. A word or word that represents that sign does not signify its meaning in any way (source: What Are Glosses in Sign Language/  https://www.ilovelanguages.com/what-are-glosses-in-sign-language ). A gloss happens because it causes when a student who learns a second language but their mind that used to be a native language as bo...
