How Deaf People Experience Music?

Fell the vibe: How deaf people experience music and create music

When I was at the International English Center, I listened to music on my white earphone, my friend asked me, "How do you experience music?" This was a good question because hearing people think that Deaf people can't listen to music.  I answered, "Yes, I do!"

How can it be? Here's I want to share how Deaf people experience music.

Deaf people can do anything except can't hear you know. Music is kind of identical to people who can listen to and sing. So, how can Deaf people experience music?

Firstly, we must always be grateful to God because we are born to have a modern-technology and it makes our life become easier and more accessible. My cellphone has Spotify-- which features lyrics so I can listen to music by singing the lyrics. Musixmatch also has the same feature. And, I can feel how it sounds will be like loud, medium, or soft, and what kind of sound I listen to and feel the vibrations. Deaf people listen to music by touching where the sound is and the vibrations. That's the way I listen to music with an earphone and I turn on full volume or 100, which is impossible to do for hearing people.

My left decibel is 80 dB and the right decibel is 100 dB, so both are categorized as profound hearing loss or deafness. I only can hear the loud sounds, like when you are going to a concert, stadium, or someplace that results in loud sounds. I can't hear how sensitive sounds are, like hangout, water, clap, whistle, and loud or medium sounds.

If I am a singer, I will be singing in sign language, so it should not problem for us. When I was a student, I learned traditional music like gamelan and angklung and as well as learned modern music such as guitar, bass guitar, and drum. I played drum and guitar when I was in high school. I also performed traditional dance when I was in SLB Don Bosco, Wonosobo. My private driver always played guitar with me in his room. I loved it. I loved writing a song and I wrote a lot of songs, mostly I wrote romantic songs for reasons I loved seeing how the couple living together on their loving and dreaming. I can feel how they love each other and fight for love. But, now, I love writing a poem or wish a song, is about religion songs. Therefore, I love how I reach, connect, commit, and live with God. God hears and sings, I write what God sings, that's the way I feel about. By inspiration from my best friend who sent me a religious poem.

Agnez Monica is the best Indonesian singer that I've seen and liked since falling in love with her when I was 12 years old. She lives in Los Angeles, California pursuing her music career. I love Selena Gomez. She is the most talented musician ever and looks to have a long musician career. I remind when she launched a Spanish song album "Revelacion" and I sang for learning Spanish. To me, Spanish songs are beautiful and enjoyable to be heard. I can be caught on to my love feeling by just listening to a Spanish song. She did, in which I have trusted that she is a Hispanic who was born in Texas and is a Texan while she launched a Spanish song. She makes me love listening to all her Spanish songs and more knowing about Hispanic culture. I nominated for the last of my three best singers, is Taylor Swift. She is the best singer that I've seen and tried to listen to for the first time. I love how she behaves and respects the fans in-concert and out-concert. She is the most caring actress ever I've loved with. As far as I know, that I love Agnez Monica, Selene Gomez, and Taylor Swift, I wish they will sing together in the future, as long as I wish it is possible. Three musicians are my all-time best singer nomination.

In addition, we have Deaf musicians, a look of you will be shocked, below:

1. Sean Forbes, a Deaf rapper and performed at the Half Time Show Super Bowl 2022 in Inglewood, California.

2. Matt Maxey, a profound Deaf singer.

3. Warren Snipe, a Deaf rapper and performed two-time Super Bowl 2021 in Tampa, Florida, and 2022 in Inglewood, California.

4. Many more, the link is https://www.ai-media.tv/ai-media-blog/famous-deaf-people-12-deaf-and-hard-of-hearing-musicians/

The famous singer in the 1770s, Ludwig Van Beethoven had profound hearing loss when he started his music career and created the biggest song album ever he created for. Of course, you know who he was.

Interestingly, there is a Deaf DJ (disc joker) named Nico DiMarco who graduated from Gallaudet University. Here's the link for more information is https://www.npr.org/local/305/2019/11/08/777303636/i-m-a-deaf-d-j-the-story-of-nico-di-marco

So, that can free up your confusion when you meet a Deaf person who listens to music and maybe can answer you are a curiosity.

As a result, we are Deaf and can listen to music and even play music because we love music! I hope I will play guitar or drum, even I can create a song because I love music.

I hope this can help you. Thanks, everyone!

Gloss, A Forgotten Learning Foreign Language and Translate

I was testing a student who stood up to share her short story in signs in our class. She was so good at signing despite sign language being the third language that she is learning and isn't a native speaker. She was confused about gloss or glosa in Indonesian. That's the thing that is most often forgotten when learning and translating a foreign language. Foreign language teachers almost never teach about gloss to students and yeah, I am sure some do and some do not.  The Gloss (Gr) means when a word is attached to a sign in simple terms. It refers to the way that ASL (American Sign Language) names signs in order to give a sense of the meanings behind them. A word or word that represents that sign does not signify its meaning in any way (source: What Are Glosses in Sign Language/  https://www.ilovelanguages.com/what-are-glosses-in-sign-language ). A gloss happens because it causes when a student who learns a second language but their mind that used to be a native language as bo...

" Take up the cross and follow me " Matthew 16: 24 If you are a loyal reader who has been reading since the first writing published in January 2020, I would like to announce that I have a fact that really needed to announce. Look at a title, that says I am Christian. Yep, I am Christian and am a follower of Christ. I have prepared some questions might you want to ask When was getting baptized? In December 2019 at GKI Gejayan, Yogyakarta. My baptized name is Malachi Raka. Where is the church usually you worship? English Worship, Yogyakarta. Why did you convert to Christianity? It’s a long story but that came to me who had been fighting for the truth and what makes me feel comfortable and to grow up who am myself. I converted because it’s my decision not because of a girlfriend, I do not have a girlfriend and am still single. After spending two years, I ended up finding Jesus Christ through coming to the church and started tearing up while listening to Christian songs. I really...
