Things Do and Don't Deaf People Based On My Experience

Source: Search Engine Journal

Hello hearing people over the world! I am sure that hearing people know that there are Deaf people everywhere but they do not know sign language and how can they communicate with them? Here is I would like to share things do and don't treat to Deaf people. This only can help you increase awareness possibility.

Deaf people are such various of background and communication. Deaf people AREN'T the same as other Deaf people. Here is the first thing that you get to know.

Deaf privilege, Deaf ally, Deaf with reading-lips, Deaf with fully sign language, Deaf with both languages, CODA/ Children of the Deaf Adult, etc. Those are can be questioned that why do hearing people never realize that Deaf people aren't the same as other Deaf people. They think Deaf people are the same. That's just the beginning problem when they meet with Deaf people for the first time.

Well, this is about the Deaf awareness. Okay, we will start with 5 things do and don't Deaf people based on my experience.

DO:

- Wave and lights to get their attention.

- Face-to-face with a Deaf person so they can make eye contact.

- Touch slowly on the shoulder or hand.

- To ask how do the communication ways that they want to (a paper, a cellphone, verbal, or gesture/ basic signs/ sign language if you know).

- Respect their signs if you identify there are different signs.

DON'T:

- Start yelling aloud if they don't looking at you.

- Throw stuff on their body to get their attention.

- Looking away or down and left or right.

- Touch hardly on shoulder or hand.

- Confused behavior and be panicked.

This is about five things do and don't treat to Deaf people. Then, where the most happened to me as often? I would pick number four do and number five don't, so why?

The number four do is to ask how do the communication ways that they want to is such something can't be implemented in Indonesia. They never ask me when they want to communicate. They assume that I can speak verbally actually I can't speak and I mean I can but as doesn't speak verbally well as they speak. If I don't speak verbally well, they will judge at me and praise other Deaf person who speaks better than me. This is disrespectful. I was verbally or reading-lips growing up but I have decided to pick sign language up instead of fully reading-lips because sign language is easier than reading-lips causes miscommunication and frustration as often as I have. So, if you don't know sign language, please prepare a paper or your cellphone so we can text each other instead.

Then, the number five don't is confused behavior and be panicked. Yes, absolutely true! That always happens everywhere I meet with! Hearing people who never meet with Deaf people growing up so they will be panicked or confused when they meet with Deaf people for the first time. That bothers me really. I feel uncomfortable when they started being panicked and confused then they will call other hearing people who come around. Their behavior doesn't represent how to respect with Deaf people that they've met. As I said to you, please stop being panicked or confused and just prepare a paper or your cellphone so that will help it more easier and make Deaf people feel comfortable and to be respected. That's an important thing that you should get to know before meeting with a Deaf person.

I hope that will help you get understand easier about meeting with a Deaf person for the first time. Trust me, they are nice, polite, and respectful. You would like them.

Thanks, everyone!

I'm a Retired Deaf Activist

I was born to a Deaf person in the middle of a hearing family who does not know sign language and grew up in different ways, neither in the Deaf world nor the hearing world. I studied at a Deaf school using a read-lips method and a mainstream school. So, I'm also a former mainstreamed school alumnus. What was the experience I have become a Deaf person? It was a thrilling journey. Living in an unfriendly country always be challenging. I sometimes was asked why was I born like that and why was I stuck at this family who doesn't know sign language. It felt unfair, though.  I had been an activist since June 2016 and joined Gerkatin (Gerakan untuk Kesejahteraan Tuli untuk Indonesia) which is a Deaf organization. I worked lots-- such as an interpreter, sign language teacher, public speaker, event committee, coordinator, and lead the group, etc-- and had experienced lots, which downs and ups. It was mixed feelings. Being an activist that what you see it looks fun and cool but either t...

Saya ...

" Take up the cross and follow me " Matthew 16: 24 If you are a loyal reader who has been reading since the first writing published in January 2020, I would like to announce that I have a fact that really needed to announce. Look at a title, that says I am Christian. Yep, I am Christian and am a follower of Christ. I have prepared some questions might you want to ask When was getting baptized? In December 2019 at GKI Gejayan, Yogyakarta. My baptized name is Malachi Raka. Where is the church usually you worship? English Worship, Yogyakarta. Why did you convert to Christianity? It’s a long story but that came to me who had been fighting for the truth and what makes me feel comfortable and to grow up who am myself. I converted because it’s my decision not because of a girlfriend, I do not have a girlfriend and am still single. After spending two years, I ended up finding Jesus Christ through coming to the church and started tearing up while listening to Christian songs. I really...
